<image:caption>Nestled atop the Berkeley Hills, this extensive renovation of an existing Mediterranean revival style home, focused on opening up previously small, compartmentalized rooms, into a home that provides more spacious and flowing spaces, while capturing the property’s sweeping views of the Bay and integrating natural light throughout. Rooms open onto decks, outdoor lanais and into courtyards, continually bringing the interior spaces together with landscape, gardens, views and the sky.</image:caption>

We purchased the property for $750k and sold it for well over $3M due to Chris’ design vision and disciplined project management. His design and ideas were instrumental in the success of the project.” -Andy Read, Owner</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected Work - Zero One</image:title>
<image:caption>The ZERO1 Garage hosts the ZERO1 Biennial exhibition, an international showcase of work at the nexus of art and technology. The Garage serves as the organization’s new 10,000-square-foot bricks and mortar home, a year-round center for cross-disciplinary exploration that honors the garage-workshop roots of such Silicon Valley pioneers as William Hewlett, David Packard, Google and others. We began collaborating with each artist to define an exhibition system that could encompass the wide array of works. We proposed an open, transparent and organic system of display. Analogous to the tech world’s open source platforms, wherein information sharing and discourse are encouraged, and attune to ZERO1’s mission, the space is defined by light, ephemeral, suspended translucent screens. The screens playfully meander and direct visitors into deep view corridors, frame works and often create intimate pockets for particular works. Art may be viewed from multiple vantages while simultaneously being layered and read along with the other works. This layering of art begins to create new meanings and interpretations of the works, resonating with ZERO1’s mission that art can create positive discourse among artists, patrons and fellows, fostering new collaborations, new creations and new innovation. <image:title>Selected Work - Grace School, Accra, Ghana - THE GRACE HOPE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, MADINA, ACCRA, GHANA</image:title>
<image:caption>The Hope International School is the first project as part of Modular Africa, a joint collaboration between award-winning non-profit, Groundwork Opportunities (GO) and San Francisco-based design collaborative, SAAT Architecture (founded by Christopher Haas, Brett Terpeluk and Peter Strzebniok). Together with GO, SAAT is developing the framework for a modular system of easily constructible “modules” that can serve as inexpensive schools, vocational centers, hospitals and community centers in the developing world. The design of the new classroom module responds to a series of critical climatic issues; extreme heat, poor ventilation and darkly lit learning spaces. The design of the module’s roof volume and its large opening acts to purge heat by creating a stack effect from abundant low-level cross-ventilation, while simultaneously allowing diffuse, bounced light into the classroom space. The modules are built with locally sourced sustainable materials; walls are easily assembled from cementitious lego-like blocks of local Pozzolana cement, roof framing built in bamboo and roof panels are corrugated metal. The nursery school is slated to open in summer of 2013 and GO is already sharing the modular design with their other partners across the developing world. <image:title>Selected Work - MH de Young Museum, SF, CA - MH de YOUNG MUSEUM, GOLDEN GATE PARK, SAN FRANCISCO, CA</image:title>
<image:caption>Located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the new MH deYoung Museum has become one of San Francisco’s most beloved and highly-active public spaces. By re-envisioning the traditional notions of art museum, the new building blends galleries with public space, arts education and large flexible multiple function event spaces. The ground level is designed and programmed to be unticketed, allowing park goers to freely meander through the building from multiple entry points in the park. Emphasis was placed on creating a design that balanced the new building with its unique park surroundings and created a publicly engaging, civic space in Golden Gate Park. - Christopher Haas as a Project Architect, HERZOG DE MEURON, design architect Role: Christopher spent nearly 4 years fully engaged in the design and construction administration of the New MH de Young Museum. As a locally stationed project architect for Herzog & de Meuron, he was involved in all aspects of the museum’s design and was responsible for ensuring the coordination of the design intent with the client, local Executive Architect, sub-consultants, engineers, and city agencies. Chris played a key role in developing and implementing the museum’s unique exterior envelop of embossed and perforated copper cladding. Additionally, he was the key H&dM team member responsible for coordinating the museum’s 134-foot rotating tower, interior spaces and administrative offices.</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected Work - 11 11 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach - 11 11 LINCOLN ROAD, MIAMI BEACH</image:title>
<image:caption>11 11 Lincoln Road redefines the paradigm of the parking garage as simply a container for cars to become Miami Beach’s most dynamic public space. The mixed-use development combines 40,000sqft of high-end retail shops and restaurants, a new public plaza, a 200-car parking structure and a 5,000sqft private rooftop residence. Inspired by Miami Beach’s rich history of Tropical Modernism, the project is conceived as an open structure of floating white concrete slabs. The structure acts as a vertical extension of Lincoln Road’s vibrant pedestrian mall below. By creating exuberant floor-to-floor heights, an enticing sculptural stair and filling the garage with program, boutique shops and multi-purpose spaces, the garage has become Miami Beach’s most celebrated public space. - Christopher Haas as Project Manager, HERZOG DE MEURON, design architect http://www.1111lincolnroad.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected Work - Boise House of Passive Principles</image:title>
<image:caption>Set in the foothills above the city of Boise, this exciting new home for a family with 3 young children is designed with an eco-responsible approach that reflects the Owner’s core values, while providing well-crafted, open, yet cozy, living spaces filled with light and natural materials. Large expanses of glass take in the stunning views of the surrounding foothills and the city of Boise below. An extended cantilevered roof, carefully calibrated by solar analysis, allows winter sunlight to penetrate deep into the home, warming the concrete radiant floor and providing abundant natural light. In the hot summer months, the cantilevered roof restricts any sun from touching the glass, hindering any unwanted solar heat gain. The roof provides shelter to a generous deck from which the combined kitchen/dining/living room flows to the outside. Sustainability, resilience and preserving the native ecology as core-values, acted as the driving force of the project’s design and low-energy goals. Passive House Design principles guide the design of the home, wherein taking advantage of solar orientation, siting, architectural form, detailing and construction assemblies, create design opportunities that achieve design excellence, while reducing the need for energy consumption in order to provide comfort and health. Bold architectural features, like the project’s uniquely shaped roof (derived from extensive 3d solar modelling), leverages passive fundamentals, by optimizing the sun’s free energy. The design allows the home to embrace the sun’s winter warmth, while restricting summer solar heat gain, as the roof tracks the sun’s seasonal paths to optimize solar benefits. The project aims to be an inspiration, captivating the public’s curiosity, while embracing energy efficiency with open-arms, and acting as a prominent and visible catalyst for change by demonstrating that sustainable and responsible design can be beautiful, affordable and accessible to all.</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected Work - Los Angeles Hills</image:title>
<image:caption>Nestled into the wooded hillside of Los Angeles, this new home offers a serene, one-of-a-kind living experience for a family with two young children. The design aims to honor the natural beauty of the site while creating a contemporary space that complements the landscape. The collaborative vision of the property owner, architect, and landscape architect was to preserve the site's intrinsic characteristics—its lush trees, rugged topography, and the iconic charm of the Los Angeles hills within the Mulholland Scenic Corridor. The home is thoughtfully sited on a flat portion of the lot at the base of an ascending hill, with select sections of the house engaging the hillside as the design progresses upward. Drawing inspiration from the modernist Case Study homes of Los Angeles—designed by architects like Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Craig Ellwood—the house is composed of multiple levels and interlocking volumes that follow the natural topography. This approach allows the home to gently wind between mature trees, integrating seamlessly with the landscape. The first floor is partially buried in the hillside, with its exposed portion clad in stone, echoing the local stone rubble walls that dot the property. This lower level acts as a grounding plinth, supporting a recessed second floor and a planted roof over the garage, which is covered in native greenery that cascades over the edge, softening the building’s massing. As the house rises up the hill, the third floor "floats" above the landscape, with the topography sweeping underneath. The upper floor extends outward toward the pool and hillside, creating a sense of continuity between indoor and outdoor living. This level is wrapped in textured, louvered wood panels finished with a dark stain, harmonizing with the earth tones of the surrounding environment. A small studio volume, the fourth floor, is perched atop the third level, its stone cladding anchoring the home to the hillside. The design features deep-set windows that cast dramatic shadows and minimize solar heat gain, while wide roof overhangs provide additional shading during the summer months. These architectural details ensure a comfortable, energy-efficient living space that is deeply connected to its natural surroundings.</image:caption>
